What Are Zoanthids?
Zoanthids (commonly called 'Zoas') are colonial soft corals that come in an extraordinary range of colours — from electric greens and blues to deep purples and fiery oranges. They're one of the most popular corals in the hobby for good reason: they're hardy, fast-growing, and absolutely stunning.
Ideal Water Parameters
- Temperature: 24–26°C (75–79°F)
- Salinity: 1.025–1.026 specific gravity
- pH: 8.1–8.3
- Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
- Calcium: 380–450 ppm
Lighting Requirements
Zoanthids are adaptable but generally thrive under moderate lighting (PAR 75–200). Placing them in the lower to mid sections of your tank is usually ideal. Avoid sudden changes in lighting intensity as this can cause them to close up and bleach.
Flow
Low to moderate, indirect flow works best. Strong direct flow can prevent polyps from opening fully. Aim for gentle, random flow that mimics natural reef conditions.
Feeding
Zoas are primarily photosynthetic but respond well to occasional feeding with amino acids or small-particle coral foods. Feed sparingly — once or twice a week is plenty.
Common Issues
Polyps won't open: Check for pests like Zoa-eating nudibranches, or adjust flow and lighting. Bleaching: Usually caused by too much light or a sudden parameter swing. Slow growth: Try target feeding and ensure stable parameters.
